Social Marketing is a term that didn’t even exist a few years ago. Now it’s all the rage, one of the most explosive concepts on the Internet today. Facebook alone has more than 600,000,000 users. If it were a country, Facebook would be the 3rd largest nation on the planet.  Just like in the early days of the forums and the news groups, it was only a matter of time before marketing came to social media.

So what does it mean to use Social Marketing in your business? One common misconception is that Social Marketing involves pestering your friends, family and colleagues with pushy sales pitches for the latest, greatest useless widgets. Not only is that completely off the point, it’s likely to earn you a couple of well-deserved charlie horses at your next holiday gathering. Being in business requires you to bring real value to the marketplace, and Social Marketing can be very unforgiving to those who fly in the face of this key concept.

It’s well known that people buy products from those they know, like and trust. In fact, author Dale Carnegie popularized this idea in his now-classic How To Win Friends and Influence People. So there’s no magic to Social Marketing. It simply means attracting people to your cause, developing genuine relationships with them, and making sincere recommendations for products that solve people’s problems.
